Annabelle is one of the world's most famous supposedly haunted dolls, but the real-life version looks nothing like the sinister porcelain figure depicted in the 2014 horror film Annabelle. Rather, she's a Raggedy Ann doll that paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren encountered in the 1970s.
"The doll was gifted to a nurse by her mother," says Wynter. According to the story, the nurse noticed that the doll inexplicably changed positions around her apartment. The alleged paranormal activity took a more sinister turn when the nurse's boyfriend claimed the doll attacked him while he slept.
Annabelle's eerie reputation has made her a pop culture phenomenon. Long displayed at paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren's Occult Museum in Monroe, Connecticut, the doll gained even greater notoriety following the release of The Conjuring in 2013 and its subsequent spinoffs. After the museum closed in 2019, comedian Matt Rife announced in 2025 that he had acquired the property and become a legal guardian of its collection, including Annabelle.
